These writers have been named Grand Masters by officers and past presidents of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA). From 2002 the honor has marked by presentation of the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award during the Nebula Awards ceremony (although it is not one of the Nebula Awards, which are voted by all SFWA members).

The Grand Master was inaugurated in 1975 with a presentation to Robert A. Heinlein and 34 Grand Masters have been named in 44 years from the 1974/1975 to the 2017/2018 cycle.
